Reconstructive surgeries aimed at correcting abnormalities caused by congenital defects, developmental issues, trauma, infection, tumors, or disease are often considered medically necessary and may be covered by insurance. For instance, the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) of 1998 mandates that group health plans covering mastectomies must also cover breast reconstruction, prostheses, and treatments for complications resulting from a mastectomy, including lymphedema.

Similarly, procedures following skin cancer removal, such as reconstructive surgery after Mohs surgery, are generally recognized as medically necessary and may be covered by insurance.
